You may recall a recent low calorie discovery of mine in the form of a yoghurt. A Greek yoghurt to be precise. It was an absolute revelation and I’m pleased to hear my love of the Muller Bliss Yoghurt has been passed on to others. I feel it’s my duty to let the Great British public know of tasty, low calorie treats I’ve enjoyed.
Thus, with this in mind, I feel duty-bound to write about another low calorie snack I’ve recently become acquainted with.
This time around my snack of choice is of the savoury variety.
I can take or leave crisps. Actually, that’s a bit of a lie. If there’s a bag open then 9 times out of 10 I’ll dip my hand in and pull out a
large small handful.
Talking of hands, I’ll stick mine up here and admit that when it comes to flavour, I like my crisps like I like my pizza.
I won’t necessarily turn my nose up to a salt and vinegar or even perhaps a cheese and onion crisp on occasion but your standard Ready Salted is what is most likely to get my taste buds tingling. I’m the total opposite to my other half who definitely prefers the more unusual flavour of crisp. You name it, he’ll eat it.
I visited a branch of Starbucks with my son today. It was just he and I which would more than likely make for an interesting hour or so.
He’s 2 and a half and proving to me that sometimes there’s a reason the “Two’s” are often referred to as “Terrible”. Lunching with a small companion isn’t always the most enjoyable of experiences it has to be said.
My son takes after his father when it comes to savoury snacks, he is something of a huge crisp fan. Often much to my dismay. However, today, I’m unashamed to admit that I was more than happy for him to have exactly what he desired. I didn’t really fancy a battle right in the middle of a rather busy Starbucks on a wet and windy Wednesday.
The savoury snacks on offer in Starbucks came in the form of Popchips. A brand I was unfamiliar with until today.
OH I HOPE HE LIKES THESE. I thought as I handed my money over to the lady behind the checkout. This could definitely go one of 2 ways. Especially as he isn’t really a fan of change. He’s a creature of habit is my little babe (just like his Mother).
As we sat down to begin our hopefully stress free lunch, I was convincing myself that a meltdown of epic proportions was about to present itself to me once he discovered these ‘crisps’ weren’t the crisps he was usually accustomed to.
I held my breath as I opened the bag of ‘sea salt potato chips’ and peered in to see some rice cake looking things.
Here goes. It’s now or never.
In goes the Popchip, will it be spat out, rejected like an unwanted pair of socks at Christmas or will it be enjoyed and met with a huge seal of approval by a rather fussy 2 year old?
The suspense is too much isn’t it? You’re on the edge of your seat aren’t you? DID HE LIKE THE GODDAMN POPCHIP OR NOT??!
I’m very happy to announce the Popchip went down an absolute treat. It was akin to my son discovering there’s a double bill of Twirlywoos on our Sky planner.
Hmmm, don’t mind if I do I thought, it would be rude not to try just one of these well received savoury snacks wouldn’t it.
My taste buds didn’t expect to experience what they did.
2 more went in, then 3, then 4, then 5 and before I knew it I’d polished off much more than my fair share. I couldn’t stop myself. My son looked at me with a look of disgust, NO he bellowed as my hand hovered towards his rather sparse looking packet. There’s only one thing for it. I’ll have to go and purchase another packet. Unsure of where and when I’d be able to indulge again.
The bag(s) I had was 23g and came in at 94 kcals. I often think low calorie crisps and the like can be rather tasteless. Sometimes I wish I’d just not bothered, tasting air would be more of a worthwhile experience. However, I’m really pleased to confirm Popchips are anything but tasteless.
If you fancy a snack of the savoury variety and wish you could have a bag of crisps but you’re watching your calorie intake etc. then I would highly recommend you procuring yourself a bag of Popchips.
If, unlike me, you’re a fan of the more adventurous flavourings then you’ll be pleased to hear Popchips come in a wide range of different tastes from mature cheese and onion through to Barbeque.
Perhaps the next time I have a reckless moment and decide I want to steer away from my standard plain, I might just have to go for a Thai Sweet Chill Popchip.
Thanks for reading, it’s time for me to go and open another bag of these beauties. Yeah I know, I’m defeating the object of low calorie snacks here aren’t I?
