Every day, every sodding day, there seems to be a ‘National day’. National Pie Day (not arsed). National Bagel Day (bought some without a hole in the other day, so basically it was just a roll). National Don’t Go To Work Day is one I’m waiting (im)patiently for. Not to mention National Sleep All Day Day. That would be divine.
Today, however, is a ‘National Day’ I can get on board with. It’s a day to revel in one of my favourite things. CEREAL.
Yep, you read that right. Today is the day we can all celebrate our love of cereal.
I’ve loved cereal since I was a kid. You name it, I’ve tried it. I’ve done the cereal diet (2 bowls of cereal per day plus a meal) and loved it. Although, I don’t think I did it right. It’s not until you pour a variety pack box of cereal do you realise just how small an amount 30g is. And this is a depressing fact. Nearly as depressing as realising I’ve given up chocolate in the month that Mothers Day falls. No chocolate to reward myself with for making it through another year of parenting.
To cheer myself up , I thought why not celebrate this illustrious day by compiling a list of my all time favourite cereals.
NB – all must be consumed with full fat milk. You can keep your red milk/half fat crap.
10. Curiously Cinnamon
I love me a bit of cinnamon. Cinammon whirls. Cinammon rolls. If it’s got cinnamon on it then I’ll eat it.
The toys that came inside this box of cereal were always the best. It devo’s me that we no longer get a toy. My Mum would never let me dig deep in the box to try and find the elusive toy upon opening a new cereal. I had to wait. Wait with baited breath for the day I pour the cereal into my bowl and Chuckie’s head from the Rugrats would be staring back up at me, ready to take his seat upon the top of my pencil.
8. Crunchy Nut Cornflakes
A classic. The pairing of honey and nuts goes so well together. It’s just a shame Kellogs didn’t agree with the next one….
7. Honey Loops. Formerly Honey Nut Loops.
WHY. Why did Kellogs decide, in their infinite wisdom, to deny us nuts with our loops? I just adored these bad boys and still do. Even if they’re nutless.
6. Coco Pops
If I have a chocolate craving (hourly at the moment with this dechox) then a bowlful of Coco Pops always satisfies my craving. But, controversially perhaps, I don’t like it when the milk goes chocolaty, it means sogginess is fast approaching. And no one likes soggy cereal.
Little perfect pillows of chocolate hazelnut. Like a Ferrero Rocher drenched in milk. I used to have a severe obsession with Krave, I’ve tried all the flavours, white chocolate (yuk), double chocolate (meh) and my favourite will always be the hazelnut. It’s a (calorific) dream.
4. Chocolate Crunchy Nut Clusters
I have no shame in admitting that I spend a great deal of time, fishing out the chocolate curls one by one and placing them into my bowl. I know it’s always going to be a good day when my chocolate curl to cluster ratio is spot on.
3. Cornflakes AND Weetabix. In the same bowl
You haven’t lived if you haven’t had Weetabix and Cornflakes in the same bowl. It’s an old school favourite of mine and something I still enjoy now.
2. Bran Flakes
Boring to some. But not to me. I love Bran Flakes. I feel like I can almost justify having 2 bowls on the bounce because they’re healthy. Even if I pour a whole pint of full fat milk all over them.
1. Rice Krispies
I ummed and ahhed over my Top 3, it has to be said. I spent a great deal (2 minutes) of time deliberating. But, when it comes down to it, Rice Krispies will always be my cereal of choice. Even if the noise they makes gets right on my (lack of) tits.
I’m now off to enjoy a bowl of the good stuff. Cornflakes today. I just feel in a cornflakey type of mood.
It’s always a good time for cereal.
