Today the first contestant for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing was announced.
And while this is all very exciting for Strictly fans (like my Mum), it paid as a reminder to me that Christmas is just around the corner. Which, to be honest, excites me more than SCD itself.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Strictly. Although, like most things, I prefer the series’ of old. The first few years of Strictly were the best in my opinion. Much like The X Factor and other Reality TV shows.
I preferred it when they didn’t do those cringe introductions at the beginning of each dance. You know the ones I mean, when the couple do a bit of acting and pretend to be really frightened when it’s the Halloween special. Oh the cringe. My toes curl up so much it’s a wonder they don’t fall off.
I blame Dancing With The Stars, the American version of SCD. They do that malarkey over there. It’s all so OTT and leaves me wishing they’d just get on with the dancing and leave the acting well alone. The cringe levels peaked a few years ago when Peter Andre got involved with the pretend play but that’s a whole other story for another blog post so I think I’ll just get on with the Top 10.
I love dancing. I’m not a great dancer. I mean, I can slut drop (just about) and I can twerk. I think. But as far as ballroom dancing goes, I am most definitely the owner of two left feet.
There have been some absolutely incredible performances over the years. Ones that have left me open mouthed, feeling all the feels and sometimes, if I’ve had a drink, trying to recreate myself. With absolutely zero success.
So, join me as I take a waltz down memory lane and countdown my most favourites.
10. Ann Widdecombe.
Just for the LOL factor. This literally made me piss. Fair play to her. Her entrance is something that will stay with me forever. As will the facial expressions on Anton’s face throughout. Brilliant.
9. Alesha Dixon.
This was just incredible. I love a good showdance and Alesha did not disappoint with this. It had EVERYTHING. And I love that woman. She’s a legend.
8. Jill Halfpenny
I’ve had to use a more recent version of Jill’s Jive for video quality purposes. She first did it in 2004 and then again in 2008. I may have tried to do this Jive myself, once or twice. Horrendous. I look a tit.
7. Louisa Lytton.
I adore this song, it’s one of the best songs ever and used so brilliantly for this dance. This was a really early performance for Louisa and Vincent and the way she dances, you wouldn’t be able to tell she’s in the early stages of her Strictly journey. Ugh journey, I hate that word when used in Reality TV.
6. Abbey Clancy
Usually I don’t like a waltz or an American Smooth. They bore me. I need passion. But the way Abbey dances here is just beautiful. One of my all time favourite songs is used here too, so I simply had to choose it. It reminds me of the time I had my heart broken in 2008 and took solace in a bottle of vodka whilst listening to Des’ree on repeat. Oh the shame.
5. Ed Balls
Ed’s Balls in your face. That is all. Iconic.
4. Jay McGuiness
This is INCREDIBLE. Sexy, powerful and slick as you like. Aliona’s choreography is just immense. I could watch this over and over again. And I have. Many a time.
3. Rachel Stevens
OH. MY. GOD. The sexiness level here is OFF THE FRIGGING SCALE. This song is another of my all time favourites. It just says sex to me. Amazing choreography and when Vincent looks at his hand as a signal for Rachel to slip hers in to his, it gives me ALL THE FEELS.
2. Danny Mac
He ain’t ugly is he, Danny Mac? Probably one of the most aesthetically pleasing men to ever grace this earth. I remember watching this live and thanking my lucky stars that I had Sky Plus, so I could rewind it again and again and again. So damn hot.
1. Mark Ramprakash
I’ve got a bit of a thing for cricketers. I wish I understood the sport because I love the men who play it. Darren Gough was another Strictly contestant who made me fall in love with him. This dance is amazing. The Argentine Tango is my favourite style of dance. It’s so moody, so passionate and Mark and Karen dance it brilliantly. He looks the part, he dances the part and it leaves me wanting to fling my legs around him and never let go.
Christ I need a cold shower after that.
