The year I left school. With a head full of dreams and a solid National Record of Achievement book in my handbag.
Not really. That book was empty. Much like my head if truth be told.
I have so many fond memories of 2002, aside from failing my GCSE’s. That isn’t something I look back on particularly fondly. I remember me and my then boyfriend using my GCSE results to spell out words. FEED, DEED, BED and FED were the most popular words we discovered in the anagram. At least I can laugh about it now eh?
The hair was still curly, an abundance of curls in fact. So much so, I likened myself to Charles II. You’ll see why when you scroll down to the bottom.
But, before you do that, have a read through of my Top 10 songs from that year.
2002 was another great year for music, specifically pop music. It was the year Flick from Neighbours went vocal, cue a load of lads watching MTV a little more frequently. It was also the year we became aware of a little known Newcastle lass called Cheryl Tweedy. I wonder what she’s up to these days? Don’t hear much about her now do we?!
10. Nelly ft Kelly – Dilemma
Because you literally couldn’t turn on the radio in September 2002 without hearing Kelly declare “and I love you, and I need you” could you?
Also, didn’t everyone send text messages using Excel? Nope, just Our Kel then.
9. Eminem – Without Me
With lyrics like “she’s back on the rag and ovulating” how could I not include the ever charming Marshall Mathers?
In all seriousness, this is one of his most catchy ditty’s and I defy you not to nod your head throughout.
8. Liberty X – Just A Little
They may not have won Popstars back in 2000 (remember the iconic Hearsay? What do you mean you don’t?) but they didn’t need to because of this absolute belter of a tune.
To be honest, the main reason for its inclusion on this list is due to its personal meaning.
I lost my virginity to this song. Yep, me being the Queen of oversharing is going to go there. It was a Saturday morning and CD:UK was on in the background. Ironic really.
7. Christina Aguilera – Dirrty
Oh how I wanted to be Xtina when I watched this video. Chaps an’ all.
In a sweat filled orgy that takes place in a boxing ring of all places, Xtina tells us the temperatures up and she’s about to erupt.
I’m sure plenty of blokes also did the same whilst watching her grind on down.
And yes, I’ve tried to emulate this video in some right old dives over the years. You can imagine how that went.
6. Missy Elliott (Basement Jaxx remix – obvs) 4 My People
Just listen to it and tell me it ain’t an absolute T.U.N.E.
Go on, I dare you.
5. Holly Valance – Kiss Kiss
“Oh my god! She’s naked!” They cried. No, she’s not, she’s just wearing some weird AF body suit.
Another song that was on CD:UK whilst I lost my virginity. In fact, I think it was Number 1 that weekend.
Yeah it went on that long. Don’t ask.
4. Faithless feat Dido – One Step Too Far
I don’t think I played anything else back in April 2002. It was just this, on repeat, on my MASSIVE computer that was consistently slow because of dial-up Internet.
Ah, the Noughties, don’t you miss it?
3. Ja Rule feat Ashanti – Always On Time
Nothing says early Noughties quite like a Ja Rule collab. And this one is my ABSOLUTE favourite.
Reminds me of driving around in my older boyfriend’s car on a Saturday night thinking I was cool as fuck, when in actual fact I was anything but.
2. Girls Aloud – Sound of the Underground
This song is really irritating if you listen to it with just one earphone in. Try it and you’ll see what I mean.
Anyway, it’s still a banger. Spare a thought for their poor chart rivals; One True Voice though. Their measly offering; Sacred Trust didn’t stand a bloody chance did it?
1. Britney Spears – Overprotected
Regular readers of mine (hi, Mum!) will know just how much I adore Brit. She is my icon. And “Overprotected” is probably my favourite track of hers. I was 15, on the periphery of 16 when it was released and it spoke to me like no other.
I’m now handing it over to my better half. The one who has put up with me for the last 7 years. Our Wes.
Pray for him.
10. Avril Lavigne – Complicated
9. *NSYNC – Girlfriend
8. Death in Vegas – Scorpio Rising
7. Blink 182 – First Date
6. Strokes – Last Night
5. Red Hot Chilli Peppers – By The Way
4. Faithless feat Dido – One Step Too Far (copycat)
3. Oasis – Songbird (my favourite Oasis track by the way)
2. Linkin’ Park – In The End (this was actually 2001 Wes, you’re lucky I love you enough to let you have it here)
1. Oasis – The Hindu Times
Cheers long un.
Me rocking the Charles II look. Cool as fuck.
