2007 was the year I moved out of home. The first time.
Yeah I’ve come and I’ve gone over the years. Much to my poor old Mother’s dismay.
I’m currently 5 years into a record stint right now, so that’s good for all involved.
I turned 21 in 2007. It was a sober affair. I remember going on yet another coach trip to celebrate my “coming of age” and vowed to never, ever, EVER do one again. It’s hideous. It’s up there with camping for me. In fact, I think I’d rather camp than go on a coach trip again.
You might look through this little collection of throwbacks and decide otherwise. And of course, that’s your prerogative. However, remember these songs are songs that either mean something to me or I just think they’re absolute bangers. Music is subjective. What you might like, I might think is appalling and vice versa.
Yeah, I think you’ll probably be of the opinion some of these are hideous.
Let’s see, shall we?
10. Leona Lewis – Bleeding Love
Find me an X Factor winner who can release a debut (winners single doesn’t count) song as good as this and I’ll laugh in your face.
Oh, you’re giving me Little Mix – Wings are you? It’s alright but it ain’t no Bleeding Love now is it? Yep, get back in your box.
9. Freemasons – Uninvited
Everything about this is amazing. The music, her voice. Actually, that’s a lie. The video is a bit cringe. But you can’t have it all can you?
8. P Diddy feat Keyshia Cole – Last Night
I played this A LOT during the first few months of 2007. I loved it then and whilst I don’t love it quite as much now, I can still appreciate it’s a decent track and fully deserving of its place in this Top 10.
7. Sugababes – About You Now
OK, so this isn’t my favourite Sugababes line up. Oh no, that would be the second line up of Heidi, Mutya and Keisha. However, when it comes to Sugababes songs, this is one of my most favourites.
I have sad memories of this song. You know when you hear a song and you’re immediately transported back to a certain period in your life? You almost feel like you’re living that life when you hear said song? ‘About You Now’ is one of those songs for me.
I’ll save the story for my memoirs.
6. Amy Winehouse – Tears Dry On Their Own
As articulated in my 2006 blog post, TDOTO is almost my favourite Amy Winehouse track. To be honest, I love all of them but this one and Back To Black are my favourites.
Like the aforementioned Sugababes track, this song reminds me of a tough period in my life. The same tough period in fact. Yeah, 2007 was a difficult year at times.
5. Justin Timberlake – What Goes Around
The video that’s paired with this song is superb. It’s like a mini movie, it even features Scarlett Johannssen and JT does a little acting turn himself. I’m not saying it’s Oscar worthy, but it’s an interesting watch all the same.
This song is my favourite JT track. It serves as a reminder that Karma is the bitch that will always deliver.
4. Timbaland feat Keri Hilson – The Way I Are
It’s just a really good pop song. It also reminds me of a fun (sober) time in my life. Yeah I had sober fun. For a while.
Don’t get me wrong, some of the lyrics are questionable at best. And downright offensive at worst. But that beat. Yeah, it gets me going. It gets the shoulders going. They’re going right now in fact, which makes typing a little difficult.
3. Robyn – With Every Heartbeat
I literally feel like I’m 21 again every time I hear this song. Which, to be honest with you, isn’t often enough. I totally forgot about it until I was doing my research for 2007. I love it when you rediscover an old song.
It’s glorious. Utterly glorious.
2. Neyo – Because Of You
Neyo’s first song was a bit annoying. It was one of those tracks you wanted to stop singing along to but you just couldn’t help it.
Because Of You is a track I want to sing along to. If you’ve ever been so unbelievably obsessed with someone, said obsession is on the periphery of becoming a problem then this song is for you.
1. Rihanna feat Jay Z – Umbrella
Well, thank you very fucking much Rihanna. Because the second you released this song in the UK, it did nothing but bastard rain.
It’s still a tune though. Definitely one of her best. Even if it was ever so slightly overplayed throughout the whole of “summer” 2007.
Lets hand it over to another music lover who wants to walk you through their Top 10 tracks from 2007 shall we?
Over to you Helen!
10. Kelly Rowland – Work (this was going to be a shout of mine for 2008 but I got the year wrong!)
9. Jordin Sparks – One Step At A Time
8. Sara Bareilles – Love Song
7. James Blunt – 1973
6. Bootie Luv – Boogie 2nite (I bloody loved the original by Tweet)
5. JoJo – Too Little Too Late
4. Just Jack – Starz In Their Eyes
3. Amy Winehouse – Back To Black (I’ll always let my contributors include a song that might not have been released that year. Especially if it’s as good as this one!)
2. Nickleback – Rockstar (this song just reminds me of that sofa advert. You know the one)
1. Maroon 5 – Makes Me Wonder (great shout mind!)
And now for a photo of Helen from 2007. I do like it when my contributors bring a throwback picture to the party.
I’m going to regret sharing this one of me.
Nice necklace. And that hair. Oh that hair.
