Whilst I’m enjoying compiling this series and remembering songs and memories of old, it often serves as a painful reminder of times gone by.
It’s also making me feel like I want to write a book.
I reckon we’ve all got a book in us. We’ve all got a story to tell. It could be autobiographical; based on our lives and experiences. Or it could be a novel. My Mum always tells me she doesn’t understand how I’d be able to write a novel because I don’t read fiction myself. She’s probably got a point but it doesn’t stop me having an imagination. And surely, that’s half the battle when it comes to writing a novel?
Anyway, I don’t think I’d want to write a novel. I wouldn’t be that great at it.
Were I to write a book, I’d want it to be factual. It would likely be autobiographical, however, I know I couldn’t do an eponymous one. I’d need to go anonymous but where’s the fun in that?
I’d had an idea of writing a book entitled “How Not To Be A C*nt”. The only problem is, I’m still learning how not to be one myself. It’s a challenge.
2009 was a difficult year. Both of my parents had cancer. As one was coming to the end of their treatment, one was diagnosed with the awful condition. It was tough. So when I think back to 2009, I always feel a little bit sad.
My 10 tracks of 2009 are detailed below. As always, it’s a real mixture of music. So come join me for a mosey down memory lane.
10. Agnes – Release Me
I got myself into a right old spot of bother in May 2009. Stuff I’d done the previous came back to haunt me. If/when I write my memoirs, which as mentioned above will likely be anonymous for many reasons, I’ll regale you with the sorry tale.
Had things gone the way I was worried they could, the fall out would have been hideous. Utterly hideous. Thankfully my worst fears weren’t realised. It was still bad but I lived to make the same mistakes once again. Idiot.
This song reminds me of that anxious time. It reminds me of being sat on a bench, in the middle of a park, on the phone to my at-the-end-of-her-tether-friend asking her for advice.
9. Calvin Harris – I’m Not Alone
Oh Calvin, how I love you so. He got hot didn’t he. Seriously fucking hot.
This earlier track of his is one of my favourites.
8. Veronicas – Untouched
This reminds me of snow. I’m not quite sure why but whenever I hear it I just think of snow. I think maybe we had some blizzards when this came out.
Who knows with my weird brain.
Anyway, it’s a tune.
7. Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow
It’s the lyric ‘you so 2000 and late’ for me. Iconic.
6. Keri Hilson/Neyo/Kanye West – Knock You Down
I couldn’t imagine Kanye West featuring on a “nice” song like this these days. This was before he went all moody and weird. I still love him though. Even if he does think he’s the greatest rockstar to ever grace this planet (he’s not – that’s Freddie Mercury).
5. Lady Gaga – Paparazzi
I knew I had to have a Gaga track. After all, 2009 was the year of The Gaga. But I didn’t know which one to go for. Would it be Bad Romance? I mean, that was a BELTER of a track. Just Dance, her debut song was just as good, if not better. And Poker Face is one of those tracks that once it gets in your brain, it ain’t going nowhere.
But no, I decided against all of the above and instead plumped for this one instead. The video is wonderful. A perfect accompaniment to a perfect pop song.
4. Dizzee Rascal – Holiday
This song is synonymous with holidays for me. Obviously. Well, it wasn’t going to remind me of going to the Dentist, was it?
It reminds me of pedaloing (is that a word?) in Mallorca whilst listening to it through my tinny sounding phone, getting pissed up on the all-inclusive on my balcony in Lanzarote and getting ready for a night of near alcohol poisoning in Ayia Napa.
The total opposite to what Storm Brian is currently delivering.
3. Rihanna – Russian Roulette
Rihanna. Oh Rihanna. She gives us the upbeat pop tracks that we dance along to on our nights out. And then she gives us the hard-hitting, slower tracks that get me right in the heart.
This one is my favourite of the slower Rihanna songs. You know those inappropriate men? The ones where you know you’re one shag away from heartbreak. This song is about them. And yet we still carry on shagging them.
The fucking arseholes.
2. Cheryl Cole – Fight For This Love
I HATED this song when I first heard it. In fact, I think one of my first tweets was me slagging it off.
But it grew on me. Like so many things have done in life. And before I knew it I was doing the hand move, I was doing the hip swerve she does and I was wondering whether I’d ever look as good as Our Chez did in military get up. The answer to that question, judging how horrific I looked in 2009, was a resounding no.
1. Lily Allen – The Fear
I wont lie.
I’m not a huge Lily Allen fan. I think, and I totally appreciate the irony here, she’s a bit of a gobshite. A hypocritical one too.
Yep, I’m still appreciating the irony.
But, I can’t deny her a compliment here. The Fear is superb. There are so many lyrics in this song that spoke to me at the time.
2009 was a funny year. 2008 had been so hectic and full on. Everything I’d recognised had changed. Including myself.
With lyrics like “I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore and I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore” was literally me during the first few months of 2009.
And, lest we forget, the renowned line “And everything’s cool as long as I’m getting thinner”. Yeah I’ve stuck that on a Facebook status on a Monday morning at the start of yet another diet a fair few times.
Allow me to now hand the 2009 baton to a Twitter follower of mine; Jon, as he walks us through the tracks of his 2k9.
10. Kasabian – Fire
9. Florence + The Machine – Rabbit Heart
8. Michael Buble – Haven’t Met You Yet (bastard YouTube wouldn’t let me add the official video)
7. Lady Gaga – Bad Romance
6. La Roux – Bulletproof – I genuinely thought La Roux was singing “next time baby I’ll be pulling through” and spent the whole of 2009 and subsequent years singing just that.
5. Kings of Leon – Sex On Fire
4. Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling
3. Lily Allen – Not Fair
2. Pixie Lott – Mama Do
1. P!nk – So What
John in 2009.
Sambuca face. Vile stuff.
