2013 was another year I saw in with an almighty hangover. New Years Eve, it’s just an excuse to get pissed isn’t it? Whether that be partaking in “forced fun” by purchasing an over-inflated ticket to get into your shitty local pub or sitting at home watching a load of people watch Big Ben do its thing.
Anyway, I headed into 2013 with a headful of plans. Expensive plans.
Arranging a wedding is bloody expensive. As soon as you mention the W word the people you’re speaking with suddenly see £ signs emerge before their very eyes.
Now, usually I’m not one to hold back on the old spending money thing. Plenty of people who know me will vouch for that. Especially my poor Dad. However, spending money on a wedding; which fundamentally is just a day, doesn’t sit right with me.
It was as if someone was looking down and telling me not to hand over a serious amount of cash . Because 4 months into my wedding planning, I made a shock discovery.
Sat on the loo one Thursday morning in mid April, I stared at a contraption that was informing me life as I knew it was to change FOREVER.
I didn’t believe what it was telling me though. I didn’t believe what the second one told me either. Nor the 3rd.
I think I stopped counting how many pregnancy tests I took once it went into double figures but I’m sure the number stood at the 20 mark. Remember what I said about me spending money?
So, the majority of 2013 was spent with me up the duff. All of my ‘going out’ that year was crammed in to the first 3 months of the year and I spent the remainder eating anything and everything in sight and basically shitting myself. Not literally of course. I had a C-Section so luckily that never happened.
10. Lucy Spraggan – (Last Night) Beer Fear
The reason behind the inclusion of this song is simple. It’s written about me. OK, not officially but it could’ve been.
I see it as paying homage to the last 10 years of my life. I always say too much when I’m pissed. And I always have to spend the subsequent 5 days apologising to everyone.
9. Jay Z feat Justin Timberlake – Holy Grail
8. Iggy Azalea – Work
You can’t not twerk along to this song. Honestly, you can’t.
7. Passenger – Let Her Go
I just really, really love this song. It was released around the time I found out I was pregnant so it always reminds me of that life changing discovery.
6. David Guetta feat Ne-Yo, Akon – Play Hard
This was my ‘Gym track’. I can remember hitting it really hard on the cross trainer and listening to this. I was so in the zone of getting fit and then I found out I was pregnant so turned to pizza instead.
I’ve never seen that level of motivation since. I think it ended up in the bin along with one of my (many) positive pregnancy tests.
5. Duke Dumont – Need You
Why is it House tracks are always accompanied by the weirdest videos?
Anyway, regardless of the odd as fuck video this is a really good track.
4. Drake – Started From The Bottom
I’ve got a real thing for Drake. He just does it for me. I recently learnt that he collects Birkin handbags to give to his future girlfriend.
HI DRAKE! I’M OVER HERE! I LIKE HERMES BIRKIN BAGS AND I LIKE YOU A LOT TOO.
3. Tinie Tempah feat 2 Chainz – Trampoline
I remember when I first heard this track I really wanted to go out and pull some questionable moves. And trust me when I say questionable because they would have been just that.
2. Beyonce – Drunk in Love
I would literally listen to this song on repeat. It’s utter filth. And I love it.
PS. Beyoncé looks UNBELIEVABLE in the video. If I looked like her I’d be prancing across a beach in the dark too.
PPS. Find someone who will look at you the way Beyoncé looks at Jay Z.
1. Birdy – Wings
This song, this beautiful, beautiful song has the potential to make me cry. In fact, I think I have had a good old sob to it before now.
It’s goosebump inducing.
I can remember being in the bath. It wasn’t long before I was due to give birth to my son and I was feeling all the emotions. Trepidation and excitement being the two main ones. This song was playing in the background and hearing the music and the lyrics just compounded everything I was feeling. So, whenever I hear it now, I’m reminded of that time in my life. A time before everything changed.
And now lets look at another’s musical journey through 2013.
